What is the ISO 9001 standard?

The ISO 9001 standard is the international benchmark that sets out the requirements of a quality management system (QMS). First published in 1987 and most recently revised in 2015, it is the most widely adopted certifiable standard in the world, with more than 1.1 million organisations certified across 170+ countries.

ISO 9001 is built on seven quality management principles: customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, continual improvement, evidence-based decision making, and relationship management.

Amendment 1:2024 "Climate action" adds two new requirements to clauses 4.1 and 4.2 on climate change. A new major version, ISO 9001:2026, is expected in fall 2026 with a 3-year transition period.

Who is ISO 9001 for?

The standard applies to any organisation, regardless of size, sector, or the nature of its products and services. SMEs, service providers, public bodies, non-profits, and global groups: the standard is intentionally generic to fit any context.

Why get certified?

ISO 9001 certification helps to access demanding markets (public tenders, large contractors, international markets), structure the organisation, improve customer satisfaction, reduce nonconformities, and strengthen brand reputation.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about ISO 9001

How much does ISO 9001 certification cost?
The cost of ISO 9001 certification depends on the size of your organisation, the complexity of your activities, and the certification body chosen. For a small to mid-sized company, expect $5,000 to $15,000 for initial audit fees, plus implementation costs (in-house or with consulting support).
How long does it take to obtain ISO 9001 certification?
The average timeline is 6 to 12 months from project kickoff to certificate issuance. Companies with strong existing processes can certify in 4 to 6 months by using a structured documentation package.
Is a consultant required to get ISO 9001 certified?
No, a consultant is not mandatory. An organisation can implement its QMS and prepare for certification entirely in-house. A well-designed documentation kit is enough in many cases. Companies without internal quality expertise often choose to combine the kit with limited consulting support.
How long is an ISO 9001 certificate valid?
An ISO 9001 certificate is valid for 3 years. During this period, the certification body performs annual surveillance audits to confirm ongoing compliance. After 3 years, a full recertification audit is required.
What's new in Amendment 1:2024?
Amendment 1:2024 "Climate action", published in February 2024, adds two requirements to ISO 9001:2015 in clauses 4.1 and 4.2. Organisations must now determine whether climate change is a relevant issue and identify the climate-related expectations of their interested parties. This requirement has been systematically audited since 2024.
