The ISO/IEC 17020 standard defines the requirements for bodies performing inspection activities (technical inspection, regulatory verification, third-party expertise). It is the global benchmark for accrediting inspection bodies, with accreditation delivered by IAS, ANAB, A2LA in the US, UKAS in the UK, and equivalent bodies internationally.
The standard distinguishes between Type A and non-Type A inspection bodies, based on their independence from inspected activities. This simplification is one of the major changes introduced in the 2026 version (which replaces the older A/B/C classification). The standard also defines requirements for impartiality, confidentiality, inspector competence, inspection methods, reporting, appeals, and complaint handling.
The 2026 version, published on 27 March 2026, modernises the standard: strengthened impartiality, digital inspection management, formal risk management, and increased focus on continuing competence. The transition deadline is set at 2029 for bodies already accredited.
The standard targets inspection bodies: third-party inspection firms, regulatory verification agencies, building inspectors, industrial safety inspectors, environmental inspectors, pressure equipment inspectors, vehicle inspection stations, and food safety inspectors.
ISO 17020 accreditation is mandatory for many regulated inspection activities, provides international recognition via IAF/ILAC mutual recognition agreements, strengthens the credibility of inspection reports, and opens access to regulated markets.
