What is the ISO 26000 standard?

The ISO 26000 standard provides guidance on social responsibility (SR / CSR / ESG). Published in 2010, it is intentionally non-certifiable: it helps organisations integrate social responsibility into their strategy without imposing a single audit framework.

The standard covers 7 core subjects: organisational governance, human rights, labour practices, the environment, fair operating practices, consumer issues, and community involvement and development. It draws on major international references (UN, ILO, OECD).

Although non-certifiable, ISO 26000 is used as a foundation by several recognised evaluation schemes: EcoVadis, B Corp Certification, Sustainalytics, and GRI Standards. It also informs major ESG reporting frameworks such as SASB and the EU CSRD.

Who is ISO 26000 for?

The standard targets all organisations seeking to structure their CSR/ESG approach: companies of all sizes and sectors, public bodies, non-profits, NGOs, and government agencies. It is particularly relevant for organisations subject to ESG reporting obligations or supplier ESG requirements.

Why get certified?

ISO 26000 helps to structure a credible ESG approach, respond to customer and tender ESG requirements, anticipate SEC climate disclosure and EU CSRD, improve EcoVadis or B Corp scores, and strengthen employer brand and stakeholder trust.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about ISO 26000

Is ISO 26000 certifiable?
No, ISO 26000 is explicitly non-certifiable. It is a guidance standard. However, several independent evaluation schemes (EcoVadis, B Corp, Sustainalytics) use ISO 26000 as a foundation to evaluate CSR/ESG performance.
Difference between ISO 26000 and EcoVadis?
EcoVadis is a private ESG evaluation platform widely used by international buyers. Its questionnaire draws on ISO 26000 and other references. A structured approach based on ISO 26000 significantly improves EcoVadis scores.
Difference between ISO 26000 and B Corp?
B Corp is a certification issued by B Lab to companies meeting standards on social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. ISO 26000 is a guidance standard. B Corp draws on similar principles but has its own evaluation framework.
Does ISO 26000 replace CSRD reporting?
No. ISO 26000 structures the approach; legal obligations (EU CSRD, SEC climate disclosure) impose specific reporting formats. An organisation can use its ISO 26000 approach to support its CSRD or SEC reporting.
How much does an ISO 26000 approach cost?
Without certification, the main cost is internal (consultant, team mobilisation, ESG projects). An EcoVadis or B Corp evaluation typically costs $5,000 to $15,000.
